10. Max's Malibu Triathlon
That's right - on Sunday "Fat Wheezy Boy Tyrie" completed the 2006 Nautica Malibu Triathlon!
The event was a 0.5 mile ocean swim, an 18 mile cycle on the "rolling hills" of the Pacific Coast Highway and a 4 mile run to finish. Which I completed in the respectable time of 2:08:38.2, putting me midway down the table for my division.
Me and my buddy Philip signed up for it back in June - seemed like a great idea at the time, we had the whole summer to train for it - we downloaded the "Mens Health Triathlon Training Programme For Beginners" and it recommended a three month gentle training plan - perfect!
Little did I know that my summer would consist mainly of drinking cheap beer round Central America and nearly gorging myself to death during a truly gluttonous three weeks of stag doos, weddings and mums' cooking back in the UK! So that was the training out of the window.
Four runs, three trips to the pool and two goes on a bike later we were at the start line. To be honest "triathlon" is a misleading name for the event: "quadrathlon" would be more like it. 5am we had to be there!!! That was the first (and toughest) event.
All in all, it went well. Better than well, in fact: it went brilliantly - didn't imagine for a second I might actually enjoy it! But I did. A lot. I did my fastest 4 mile run ever (of the two previous attempts anyway) at 34:02 (that's minutes and seconds, not hours and minutes). The half mile ocean swim was good fun - Fox Mulder shot past me like a torpedo (don't worry - I beat him on the run) and the 18 mile bike ride was the best! Honestly - it was the third time I've been on a bike in years - and I was flying along - up and down the hills of the Pacific Coast Highway - I had a big grin on my face the whole way round.
I was in the "mens' mountain bike" division - which means we were stupid enough to cycle 18 miles up and down hills on a mountain bike - next year I'll do it properly on a road bike.
Of the 29 people in our division I finished a very respectable 15th! (and Philip pipped me to the post and came in 12th!). There were over 2500 competitors overall - so it was a huge event - and very exciting to be a part of...we can't wait for next year's...we might even do some training!
You can check out my results at www.nauticamalibutri.com (go to "results" and look for the mens' mountain bike division).
Does my bum look big in this?
And they're off!
In my defence, no one looks cool in a cycle helmet.
I promise - it was one of the rules - sleeveless shirts ONLY!

Pretty good going Max!
Where did you come out of all the field? They look like a fairly serious bunch of people - especially dressed in black at that time of day - I would have been terrified just standing beside them - and the thought of swimming half a mile in deep water in the sea, it's enough to make me open another bottle of wine!
